The Crown Jewel of Tasmanian Alpine Rockeries
The Diselma archeri—commonly known as the Tasmanian Dwarf Pine or Cheshunt Pine—is an incredibly rare, monotypic conifer endemic strictly to the high-altitude alpine regions of Tasmania’s west coast and central plateau. Finding this species on the Australian mainland is almost impossible. At Sequoia Valley Farms, we are the ultimate mainland authority on this niche alpine treasure. We utilize an elite, dual-state supply chain: sourcing directly from our specialist Tasmanian growers to supply local island customers, alongside our premium Victorian network to service the mainland. We intentionally curate this species in smaller, highly refined collector sizes. Our boutique 140mm specimens (20–25cm tall) and 200mm stock (~40cm tall) are the absolute perfect starting points for prestige bonsai cultivation or specialized cool-climate rockeries. For serious collectors requiring larger commercial batches, we offer custom grow-to-order propagation with an 18 to 24-month lead time.

THE PINNACLE OF SPECIALIST COLLECTING*
*Because Diselma archeri is a naturally dwarf, incredibly slow-growing alpine shrub, it is rarely produced beyond a 200mm pot size in commercial horticulture. Our 140mm and 200mm plants represent years of careful, slow cultivation.
The Diselma archeri (Tasmanian Dwarf Pine) is a true botanical masterpiece. It is the only species within its genus (monotypic) and is a proud member of the ancient Cupressaceae family. In its native habitat—clinging to the exposed, rocky subalpine tarns of Tasmania—it forms a dense, sprawling, cascading shrub. Its most striking feature is its incredibly fine, tightly overlapping scale-like leaves that form delicate, weeping, thread-like branchlets.
Because of its natural miniature scale, intricate texture, and weeping habit, the Cheshunt Pine is considered a holy grail within the Australian bonsai community. It is equally revered by alpine garden enthusiasts looking to anchor a cool-climate rockery. Because we maintain an elite dual-supply network spanning Tasmania and Victoria, SVF is one of the only nurseries in the country equipped to reliably supply this rare endemic. If you want to buy a Tasmanian Dwarf Pine, you are securing a piece of living Gondwanan history.
- Prestige Bonsai Subject: The naturally miniature scale-like foliage, slow growth, and weeping branchlets make it an exceptional, high-end species for bonsai cultivation.
- Alpine Rockery Perfection: Thrives in cool, moist, well-draining environments, making it the ultimate structural anchor for specialised trough or alpine rock gardens.
- Direct Island Supply: We proudly offer direct supply to our Tasmanian customers from within the state, bypassing standard biosecurity delays.
- A Monotypic Rarity: As the only species in the Diselma genus, it is a botanically unique, must-have addition for serious collectors of endemic Gondwanan flora.

Detailed Description and Specs
The Tasmanian Dwarf Pine (Diselma archeri), also known as the Cheshunt Pine, is an endemic, evergreen coniferous shrub native to the high-altitude alpine zones of Tasmania’s west coast and central plateau. It is a monotypic genus (the only species in Diselma) within the Cupressaceae family.
In its harsh native habitat, it forms a dense, sprawling, or cascading shrub, usually reaching 1 to 4 metres in height. The foliage is exquisite: tiny, blunt, scale-like leaves (only 1–2mm long) that tightly overlap and press against the stems in opposite pairs, creating fine, weeping, square-profiled branchlets. It is a dioecious species, with female plants producing tiny, solitary cones holding incredibly small winged seeds.
- Species: Diselma archeri (Tasmanian Dwarf Pine / Cheshunt Pine)
- Foliage: Tiny, overlapping green scales on dense, weeping branchlets.
- Growth Rate: Extremely slow.
- Habit: Dense, sprawling dwarf alpine shrub.
- Best For: Prestige bonsai cultivation, alpine rockeries, and specialised trough gardens.
Care and Planting Guide
Replicating the cool, moist conditions of the Tasmanian alpine tarns is essential for successfully cultivating this rare dwarf conifer.
- Sunlight & Location: Performs best in full sun to partial shade in cool climates. In mainland regions with warmer summers, it must be protected from hot afternoon sun and drying winds to prevent foliage scorch.
- Soil & Drainage: Requires a cool, moist, highly porous root run. It thrives in gritty, peaty, or rocky soils with excellent drainage. It is a perfect candidate for raised alpine rockeries or trough gardens.
- Watering: Do not allow the root zone to dry out entirely. It requires consistent moisture, mimicking the regular rainfall of its alpine home. Use a gravel or grit mulch to keep the roots cool.
- Bonsai Culture: Adapts beautifully to shallow pots, provided the potting medium is premium and free-draining (e.g., Akadama/Pumice blends) and the pot is shielded from extreme summer heat.
